Types Of Coffees and Details



  Ø What the terms mean

Ø  Americano
A style of coffee prepared by adding hot water to espresso to give it similar strength but a different flavor than regular coffee.

Ø  Turkish coffee
A sweetened drink made from pulverized coffee beans

Ø  Arabica
The earliest cultivated coffee, yielding rich flavor, aroma and body. Used in the production of quality and gourmet coffees

Ø  Barista
(Italian) An experienced and skillful espresso operator

Ø  Black tea
Tea that undergoes full oxidization turning the leaves from green to coppery red. Finally these leaves are fired in order to arrest fermentation, turning the leaf black and giving it the recognizable tea scent.

Ø  Caffeine
A bitter, odpurless alkaloid stimulant present in tea and coffee

Ø  Cappuccino
An Italian coffee made with one-third espresso, milk and foamed milk and often dusted with cocoa powder, ground cinnamon or nutmug

Ø  Chai
Indian terms for tea, often masala or spiced tea, made from strong black tea, milk, sugar and various spices

Ø  Chicory
Dried roasted and ground root of the chicory plant used as a substitute for coffee. It has no caffeine and yields a more roasted flavor than real coffee

Ø  Crema
The thick, rich foam that sits on top of a fresh shot of espresso.

Ø  Demitasse
A cup used to serve espresso normally capable of holding 3oz of liquid.

Ø  Doppio
A double espresso or three to six ounce of straight espresso


Ø  Earl grey tea
A classic black tea blended with bergamot oil, a Mediterranean citrus

Ø  Espresso
A strong Italian coffee brewed by forcing hot water under high pressure through finely ground dark roasted coffee beans

Ø  Frappe
A cold coffee drink made from freeze dried instant coffee cold water, ice, milk, sugar, ice cream and chocolate syrup

Ø  Green coffee
Unroasted coffee

Ø  Green tea
An unfermented tea where freshly picked leaves are allowed to dry and are heat-treated to retain the fresh taste and green color. It is nearly colorless and has no caffeine

Ø  Latte
A serving of espresso combined with about three times as much hot milk, topped with froth

Ø  Macchiato
A serving of espresso topped with steamed or foamed milk

Ø  Matcha
Powdered green tea that the Japanese have used for centuries in traditional tea ceremonies. Higher in caffeine than coffee (180mg in typical cup versus 85mg in a standard cup of coffee)

Ø  Mocha
Coffee made from shot of espresso, milk, chocolate syrup and whipped cream

Ø  Oolong tea
A semi- fermented, whole-leaf tea from china and Taiwan

Ø  Organic coffee
Coffee that is grown and processed without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or similar chemicals

Ø  Percolation
The method of brewing coffee in which hot water percolates, or filters down through a bed of ground coffee

Ø  Robusta coffee
A type of coffee high in caffeine and strong. It is generally less acidic and aromatic than Arabica with a slightly woody taste


Ø  Thai tea
Flavored black tea usually mixed with condensed milk or coconut milk to complement the spiciness of Thai food

Ø  White tea
Light sweetish and very delicate tea, high in antioxidants and made with only the buds of tea bush.

Ø  Whole-bean coffee
Coffee that has been roasted but not yet ground

Ø  Yellow tea
Rare, yellow-hued tea with a distinctive mellow flavor made from the buds of a tea bush.
Yerba mate (pronounced mah-tay) a shrub in the holly family that grows in South America and as a beverage, is ubiquitous in several South American countries.
